15th-19th August 2012

Launch

The Launch on August 15th will officially kick start the biggest ever Indian event in Ireland – Dublin Mela 2012. There are Melas in Belfast, Edinburgh and many other cities across Europe, Dublin has yet to have one during its calendar year and this marks a new beginning. Hopefully this Mela will bring the Indian community closer to other communities in Ireland and will promote Ireland as a major tourist destination among Indians. Indians are a widely travelled lot both for tourism as well as for migration.

Around 400,000 Indians travel to UK every year for tourism, studies, business etc. and in 2012, the number is supposed to soar due to the London Olympics. Keeping the Olympics in mind, the Irish government had recently announced ‘The short stay Visa Waiver Programme’ for 16 countries including India, whereby if a citizen of these countries had a UK visa and they landed in UK first, they could visit Ireland without an Irish visa. Originally this programme was supposed to run for 4 months till October 2012, but due to the huge success of the programme, this has been extended for four years. The Mela will be another step towards bringing some of these people to Ireland which will help boost Ireland’s tourism income.
The Dublin Mela will be the place where east meets west in terms of culture, arts, sports and Bollywood.

Unitas-Isac is proud to announce that the first ever Mela launch would also present to Ireland the first ever Irish Premiere of a Bollywood Movie. “Ek Tha Tiger” (There was a Tiger) is a blockbuster Bollywood movie, a major part of which was shot in and around Dublin during October 2011. The reason the production came to Dublin was because the director of the movie, Kabir Khan wanted to shoot the movie in Trinity College. The movie is produced by Yash Raj Films, an Indian movie production company set up in 1976 by Yash Chopra, an eminent Indian film director and producer. In the last three decades, the company has grown from strength to strength and today has to its credit India’s most enviable film catalogue. Some of their films have been the highest grossers in Indian movie history. ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ stars two of the biggest names in Indian Cinema, Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif, and is due for a major release in 24 territories worldwide on August 15th , which also coincides with the Indian Independence Day and is expected to reach an audience of over 100 million people.

The Irish Film Board has spent over two years enticing this project to Dublin and it has received considerable support and assistance from numerous Government agencies and also the private sector including Tourism Ireland, Trinity College, Dublin City Council, the Office of Public Workds, Dublin Bus, the LUAS, St.Stephens’s Green Shopping Centre, Temple Bar Traders Association among others. The project resulted in over €1.4 million being spent directly in the local Dublin economy on hotels, restaurants, transport etc. over the 5 week period.

This is a great privilege for Unitas ISAC to partner with the Irish film Board and Tourism Ireland to organise the Irish Premiere as part of the Dublin Mela.

So stay tuned for additional information on the exact plans for the Launch day which is expected to be presided by the Ministers, Honourable Lord Mayor, respected Indian Ambassador along with other dignitaries and guests from the Irish Film industry.

Admission to Premiere is strictly by invitation ONLY. NO MORE TICKETS ARE AVAILABLE
